We arrived in the Old City as morning light struck the honeycomb facade of Hawa Mahal. Built in 1799 with 953 intricate jharokhas (casements), it was designed so royal women could observe street festivities without being seen. Standing across the street with a steaming cup of spiced chai, the morning breeze whistled through the carved stone latticework just as it has for over two centuries.
Later in the afternoon, we climbed up through the serpentine ramparts of Amber Fort overlooking Maota Lake. The Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) ceiling glowed with thousands of imported concave mirrors that reflect a single candle flame across the entire royal hall.
At dusk, we navigated the vibrant spice and textile lanes of Johari Bazaar. The aromatic fusion of fresh cardamom, roasting cumin, and block-printed cotton was unforgettable.
